- Your SIM card stays in the phone
- On most phones with eSIM your SIM card stays in place while the data comes from the eSIM. Switch off data roaming on your SIM card so nothing runs in the background.
- An additional number without roaming
- With Start you get an additional German mobile number in the app, alongside your own number with your mobile operator. On it you make calls over Wi-Fi or data without roaming, and texts to that number land in the app.
- Only for the months you travel
- Start can be cancelled monthly. You book it for the months you are away.

Calls and texts in the app work wherever your phone has a data connection: hotel Wi-Fi, a local network or an eSIM from the app. Mobile data is available for the countries and regions offered in the app.
Yes. Your Phonestar number is a real German mobile number, not a landline or special-rate number. Texts to that number land in the app wherever you are: codes from banks, payment services, government portals and online accounts, as well as personal messages. Whether a particular service sends texts to your number is up to that service.
Start can be cancelled monthly: you pay one month in advance and cancel at the end of the current calendar month. The Phonestar number belongs to your contract — it ends when you cancel; if you want to keep it, keep the contract running. Data packs only run as long as stated with the pack anyway, and they do not renew.
Yes. For another device the app shows a QR code. Once installed, the eSIM stays on that device.
Yes, on your German Phonestar number. They pay an ordinary call to a German network, wherever you happen to be.
No. On Wi-Fi the app makes calls without an eSIM. If you want to be online right after landing without looking for Wi-Fi, the eSIM is the most convenient.
